Sports
As part of its effort to provide an all-round education, TNS places a particular focus on offering a complete sports programme for all of its pupils. This programme is designed to meet the needs of all of our age groups. It is compulsory for all pupils from Nursery to Year 12 to take part in weekly physical education and swimming lessons.
For our youngest learners, sports lessons involve building confidence, coordination and simple skills including running and jumping games and basic agility exercises. Gymnastics equipment including a tumble track is also in place along with a balance beams and other equipment.
For older students the program focuses on organised individual and team sports. TNS is aware that physical activity is a key component of the IB philosophy at all levels and as a result of this the school encourages all of its students to be enthusiastic participants and try out new skills as part of an effort to develop a healthy life-style and promote team spirit. The school encourages chess as an activity which can help develop thinking skills and promote disciplined intellectual focus. This is an area in which many children lack at this age as the electronic media and computer screens occupy most of their time. Before and after school clubs are offered for students of all ages in soccer, cricket, gymnastics, chess, volleyball, and other sports. Specialised coaches run the swimming program throughout the year with heated pools in winter. TNS has access to the Beaconhouse Sports Complex for weekend league competition/practices and a riding school at Bedian Road.
Teams from TNS have been participating in more and more inter-school contests over the last year. They have taken part in cricket, swimming, chess, athletics, volleyball, dodgeball, tug of war and other competitions against other schools. Competitions within the school have also been held regularly and have included the annual TNS Little Masters’ chess championships, swimming galas for boys and girls, sports days for Early and Primary years and an athletics championship for seniors.
TNS Beaconhouse believes sports is an important element of the holistic learning and also includes Physical and Health Education in its MYP curriculum, making it available as a subject for those who wish to take it up. TNS schools have every intention of expanding its sports program year by year until we offer truly defined sports/physical skills acquisition environment.
