Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is at the heart of the Diploma Programme at TNS Beaconhouse. It involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies which they have to take up as a challenge. It is primarily about undertaking new experiences beyond the classroom and reflecting upon them to develop one’s personal skills. It is not there as a burden but actually there to provide a refreshing balance between the academic and co-curricular.

Creativity: Exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance such as Photography, Journalism, Drama, Theatre, Art, Cookery, Musical instrument, Debating, Mentoring, Dance, Creative writing, film making

Activity: Engaging in activities involving any form of Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle such as Football, Basketball, Tennis, Athletics, Cricket, Mixed Martial arts, Circuit training, Aerobics, yoga, Gym.

Service: The collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need which has to be unpaid and voluntary. Experiences such as Reading to the blind or elderly at a Centre, organizing a Musical concert or volunteering at school events, Recycling initiatives, teaching the less fortunate, refurbishing an old government school or schools for the under privileged and many other can be classified as Community Service initiatives. Fundraising for a cause could be considered but only with an NGO they volunteer with and which leads to an event they are part taking in.

Some of the aims of CAS are to create:

  • Risk takers
  • Reflective thinkers
  • Active participants
  • Balanced individuals
  • Experiential learners
  • Individuals more aware of their surroundings

CAS students should seek to raise awareness of CAS within the school. For example, by developing links between individual subjects and the CAS programme. TNS will broaden the range of activity providers for students, both in the local community and further afield. It will also encourage presentations by activity providers for students in the school, and by students themselves. Bearing in mind the health, safety and time factors of our students, we provide opportunities for our students to engage in after school clubs such as teaching the auxiliary staff literacy skills’, volunteering in the library; Robotics, Debating, Dance, Yoga and others all free of charge.

Student progress is monitored through our Managebac software. The individual’s profile includes details of all their CAS experiences such as plans, reflections and evidence which must be updated before, during and at the end of every experience. The assessment criteria is no longer based on hours but rather on the content of the reflection and the evidence collected. There are 3 scheduled meetings/interviews by the CAS Coordinator over a span of 18 months to gauge student progress and provide guidance.

CAS is an obligatory compo ant of all IB Diploma programmes and satisfactory completion thereof is essential to be even awarded the Diploma.
